Praise First
(Zechariah's Kingdom Assignment)
When Zechariah doubted, the angel silenced him for nine months. Imagine what was going on inside him as Elizabeth became pregnant, and he could not speak a word.
His silence was protection, not punishment.
Silence guarded the promise from fear-filled words.
Silence slowed him down long enough to listen.
Silence created space for God to reshape his confidence.
Think about the longest stretch you have ever gone without speaking. When words are taken away, awareness increases. You notice more and weigh words more carefully.
When the child was born, everyone assumed he would be named after his father. Elizabeth said his name will be John. She trusted God’s authority and aligned herself with God’s kingdom.
Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “his name is John.” Immediately, his voice returned, and his first words were praise.
Luke tells us he was filled with the Holy Spirit, and what came out of him was not explanation or regret, but worship. His song announces the kingdom of God breaking in, pointing to Jesus.
God has come to redeem. Mercy is triumphing. Light is piercing the darkness. People are being set free so they can serve God without fear. (Read Luke 1:67-75)
Zechariah did not choose this assignment. He still had to respond.
His confidence in God grew through humility that praises first, courage that steps into uncertainty, and obedience that aligns with God’s kingdom. It can be the same for you.
What is one situation in your life right now you did not choose but want to respond in faith?
What is in your control? What is not?
What would trust look like today if you aligned your response with God’s kingdom?

This series on Zechariah’s kingdom assignment has been so enlightening. Thank you!
That is the key - aligning my response with God's kingdom. I try, I fail, and I try again.
