When Jesus Was Silent
There is a moment in Matthew 15 that unsettles me every time I read it. A woman is begging Jesus to help her daughter, who is tormented by a demon. She is desperate and persistent.
Here was His response. “But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word.” (Matthew 15:23)
The silence is hard to sit with. It raises questions we don’t like to ask out loud. Why would Jesus ignore someone in pain?
When Jesus finally speaks, it gets harder before it gets better. He tells her His mission is first to Israel. Then He compares her request to giving children’s food to dogs. Nothing about this seems gentle.
But the woman did not back down. She let him know that even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps from the master’s table. That’s when Jesus saw her faith and granted her request. Her daughter was healed and set free.
This was confusing to me until I saw the location where this took place. It was in Tyre and Sidon.
Throughout the Old Testament, Tyre and Sidon represent proud, pagan nations that completely opposed the One True God. The prophets repeatedly pronounced judgment on these specific cities.
This woman came from a place that had opened their lives to pagan deities, and they were living with the consequences. Jesus is not being cruel. He is naming the reality.
She does not defend her city or demand rights but humbles herself to trust Jesus anyway. Her persistent faith was an indicator of what was to come. Jesus is showing where His mission is headed.
Israel came first but the Kingdom will not stop there. It was being established for all people who are under the rule and reign of Jesus as king.

Very interesting observation.
Great Faith she has, what great courage and belief. What a testament. Can I follow that?
